The idea came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. A variety of outdoor activities marked Earth Day at Tumo plaza and the adjoining park area. The young soccer amateurs competed with their peers in a newly constructed soccer field. Nature-lovers spread picnic blankets, enjoyed food and listened to the musical sounds of a guitar.  A group of students drew with iPads while sitting on the green grass. Dance lovers were splashed around in Tumo's reflective pool showing off their dance moves to the crowd.

The event was organized to celebrate the planet and provide the youngsters with the sense of respect and appreciation for nature's gifts, joys and beauties.
