Hack the Tumo Fountain

About Python

Python is a remarkably powerful dynamic programming language that is used in a wide variety of application domains.  Its syntax is said to be clear and expressive. Python has a large and comprehensive standard library.

Like other dynamic languages, Python is often used as a scripting language, but is also used in a wide range of non-scripting contexts. Using third-party tools, Python code can be packaged into stand-alone executable programs. Python interpreters are available for many operating systems.

CPython, the reference implementation of Python, is free and open source software and has a community-based development model, as do nearly all of its alternative implementations. CPython is managed by the non-profit Python Software Foundation. Read more >>

Led by computer science students from UC Berkeley, Harvard and Columbia Universities, 40 enthusiastic Tumo students had the opportunity to design program and implement a light show for the Tumo fountain's over 300 LED lights. The students were split into competing groups and taught to use Python, an increasingly popular programming language, to manipulate the fountain's lights process according to their designs. The best light shows will compete against one another in a large-scale performance and competition in the spring.
