The Tumo Center celebrated its grand opening on August 14, 2011 in Yerevan, preceded by a 2-day celebration that included an open-air concert by popular reggae band Reincarnation and American DJ BaxStar. Over 20,000 people gathered on opening day to see performances by rock musicians Dorians and Serj Tankian. After the concert, the latter agreed to become a member of the Tumo board of advisors.

The main event was opened with a 3D projection on the side of the Tumo building based on Hovhannes Tumanyan's fairy tale "A Drop of Honey". Video game developer and Tumo Board Member Alex Seropian led a team of teenage programmers who designed and presented an interactive game that was also projected onto the building and engaged the audience members by requiring them to raise multi-colored glow sticks in order to "zap" creatures that would appear "on screen." The grand opening was also attended by President Serzh Sargsyan.
