What is 'moulage'

 

Moulage is a fashion design term where the designer fits or molds the fabric directly on the model or dressmaker dummy. It’s a very interesting fashion design process that allows the fashion designer to create in three dimensions rather than one – such as when a sketching a design. The aim of the workshop is to enable students to create thematic characters through the design of their costume  specifically using the moulage technique.

As a result of this technique a collection comprised of 6 models was created,  justifying previous expectations both professionally and creatively. Through this workshop, participants were able to understand the concept of fashion, learning both theoretical and practical processes.

In the first stage of understanding the basic concepts of clothing design, they were given the task of creating a character costume independently, combining the color and the style.The next step was to learn how to use the moulage technique, which gave a great opportunity to learn how to stylize fabric to create new original interpretations.

Throughout this workshop, students learned how to make their creations using paper and iPads. Most importantly, they actualized their designed costumes using real mannequins. Finally they managed to create non-standard chess characters using a combination of colors, images, style, which will help them in the future for creating more brave and confident characters.
