The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are put in financial difficulty. They decide to change their name and record a new album with a new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

It was the first time that all original Toto members were performing together for more than 31 years. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

The album was a return form for the band, and the tour accompanied it with sold-out shows across North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was helped by the addition of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who had both returned to the band.
