Starting in February, workshop leader Natacha Kalfayan will lead a project on revamping and reusing old furniture. During the one month workshop, students will learn how to give new life to old and seemingly obsolete objects.

Sixteen Tumo students will work in groups of two to revamp a chair or other piece of furniture using one of three approaches: to give it a 'facelift' while maintaining the original form, to rebuild it making it multi-functional (a chair/desk combination for example), or to create a completely new product which no longer has the function of the original object. They will also reupholster chairs using non-traditonal materials such as grocery bags, wool, duct tape and other everyday materials. By the end of the workshop students will have learned how to design, paint and sand to a professional level as they will be aiming to create marketable products.

Natacha has a background in interior design, construction and art direction. "I want to open up the students' minds and get them to see things differently," said Natacha. "Students will have to be flexible and think of multiple solutions which they will then narrow down to come up with a final design."
