What started off as a self-funded startup in "little known" Armenia in 2011, became a chart topping mobile app within its first year of operation. During that first year, PicsArt received 35 million downloads and 2 million active users on Google Play with a small team and no outside funding.
PicsArt co-founder Artavazd Mehrabyan believes that the app's success has been in listening to user feedback. He sees it not just as a mobile app, but rather a community of ''PicArtists'' who communicate and express themselves through images.
Since its establishment in 2011, PicsArt has upped those numbers to 200 million downloads, 60 million active users, a recent $10 million boost in funding from Sequoia Capital, and a team of around 100 spread between San Francisco and the 3rd floor of the Tumo building.
Many Tumo students aspire to have their own startups or work in the startup scene, and for them PicsArt is a solid example of what innovation and determination can lead to. And all they have to do is take the elevator up two floors to see the inner workings of this silicon valley style startup headquartered in Yerevan.
