Have you ever thought about what you would do with old or damaged furniture? Throw it away is the most likely answer. At Tumo, however, seemingly useless furniture has been painted, sanded, upholstered and revamped by hand by 16 students.

Students gathered old chairs in February and worked in groups to give them a new lease of life. The archaic lounge chair was transformed into a cozy fairy tale themed spot telling the story of the Little Red Riding Hood – perfect for reading your favorite book. The simple stool is now both a newspaper stand and a trendy looking seat, ready for any room in the house. The re-upholstered "Grandmother" sofa chair and the matching wooden "Grandchild" chair will add a stylish and homely touch to wherever they are placed. A step ladder took on an additional function of being a seat and a magazine holder. One chair draws attention to the small details of our morning routines, in black and white. And another chair even tells a love story.

In the process of revamping the furniture, each student learned how to turn an initial spark into an overall concept, and then implement it. Through the use of everyday materials such as wool, duct tape and grocery bags, students made the otherwise obsolete furniture both functional and marketable. In addition to being practical pieces of furniture for the home, they are also works of art in their own right.

The revamped furniture has made Tumo's installation area look like the best spot for hanging out, reading or chatting with friends.
