Starting on July 7, Pixar character animation artist Zaruhi Galstyan will lead a workshop introducing students to the fundamentals of character design for animation, with an emphasis on storytelling and creating personality.

Students will learn the principals of design as well as the philosophy of bringing characters to life through the use of shape, proportions, line and color. The course will begin by focusing on the language of basic shapes and silhouettes and how they affect the process of designing characters. Throughout the workshops, students will be taught how to develop conceptual designs into functional characters for animation, concentrating on poses and expressions for storytelling.

Zaruhi is a graduate of the CalArts Program in Character Animation. She began her career as a character design intern at Pixar Animation Studios working on Toy Story 3. Her next major assignment was at Disney Toon Studios as a character designer and visual development artist. She is currently working at Pixar again as a sketch artist.
