Pixar character animation artist Zaruhi Galstyan recently completed a character animation workshop at Tumo. Participants learned the fundamentals of character designs for animation, focusing on creating individual personalities for characters to depict a story.

The course began by introducing participants to the language of basic shapes, silhouettes and the principles of design. Throughout the workshops, students were taught how to develop a character from concept to completion for animation. Using Photoshop students concentrated on poses and expressions for storytelling and each participant created their own version of Hovhannes Tumanyan's fictional character Nazar the Brave for animation. Students have completed the initial phase and will finish their character in September. See a sneak peek below of what's to come in an exhibition of their work in September.

Zaruhi began her career as a character design intern at Pixar Animation Studios working on Toy Story 3 after graduating from the CalArts Program in Character Animation. Her next major role was at Disney Toon Studios as a character designer and visual development artist. She is currently working at Pixar again as a sketch artist.
