Photojournalist Eric Grigorian and writer and educator Nyree Abrahamian are leading a five month project entitled “Family: A Photo-Literary Documentary Project”. The project, which is part of a global initiative sponsored by Syracuse University’s Multimedia Photography and Design Department and The Alexia Foundation aims to create a body of work which portrays contemporary Armenian family life. The concept of family is deeply personal, which makes documenting it especially challenging and rewarding.

Through photos and words, each participant will create a photo story about their own family, highlighting the presence or absence of family members. As the word “family” carries a range of connotations, participants are encouraged to conduct interviews with their family members, achieving a deeper understanding of their character. In addition to visually capturing the reality of their families, students will develop a written story to accompany the photographs, bringing voice to the images.
